Mark Tommerdahl returned to TCU in December 2021, initially serving as special teams coordinator before becoming the special assistant to the head coach in 2024. Tommerdahl's first stint with the Horned Frogs was from 1998-2000 as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. In 2022, he orchestrated TCU's memorable "Bazooka" play, resulting in Griffin Kell's game-winning 40-yard field goal against Baylor. Under Tommerdahl's guidance, Kell earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors, and Derius Davis won the Jet Award as the nation's top return specialist. Before rejoining TCU, Tommerdahl spent three seasons at Texas Tech, where he was associate head coach and special teams coordinator, and had previously held similar roles at Cal and Louisiana Tech under TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes.

Tommerdahl's extensive career includes a notable tenure at Purdue in 2018, where his special teams units were pivotal, and Rondale Moore won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation's most versatile player. In 2017 at Utah State, Tommerdahl's units excelled in blocked punts and kick return defense. At Cal, his teams led the Pac-12 in kick return defense, and he coached standout players like punter Ryan Allen, a two-time Ray Guy Award winner, and Trevor Davis, a First-Team All-Pac-12 kick returner. Tommerdahl has also coached at ULM, Texas A&M, Alabama, New Mexico, and Minnesota, bringing over 25 years of experience as a special teams coordinator and producing numerous award-winning players. A native of Fergus Falls, Minn., Tommerdahl began his coaching career at Wyoming, where he also earned his MBA.
