The Coach
Sanders Davis, who became the Rice Owls' offensive line coach in March 2020 after joining as an offensive graduate assistant in 2019, is entering his fourth season with the team. He faces the challenge of replacing Shea Baker, a record-setting player with 54 career starts and nearly 3,700 offensive snaps. Davis will rely on key returnees like left tackle Clay Servin, a fixture on the offensive line and an Outland Trophy Watch List member, and right tackle Ethan Onianwa. The lineup includes Nebraska transfer Brant Banks at left guard and Braden Nutter at center, with John Long and Lavel Dumont competing for the right guard spot. Before Rice, Davis spent five seasons at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he served as run game coordinator, offensive line coach, head soccer coach, strength coach, and English teacher, guiding the Bears to two Division 1 state titles. A standout lineman at Catholic High, Davis played center at Dartmouth from 2010-2013 before graduating and returning to Baton Rouge to teach and coach.
Mike Bloomgren, the Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach at Rice University, is entering his sixth season and aims to build on the momentum of the team's recent bowl appearance as they join the American Athletic Conference. Bloomgren has significantly bolstered the roster with the highest-ranked recruiting class in Rice's modern history and 42 new players, including experienced transfers from other FBS programs. His tenure has seen a steady improvement, highlighted by a strong finish in his second season and a historic shutout win against a ranked opponent in 2020. Off the field, his teams have excelled academically, ranking in the top 10% of FBS programs for graduation success. Bloomgren's philosophy of "Intellectual Brutality," developed during his successful stint at Stanford, has broadened Rice's recruiting reach nationwide. At Stanford, he coached several NFL Draft selections and All-Americans, contributing to a decade of program success. Before Stanford, Bloomgren gained experience with the New York Jets and at various collegiate programs. A Florida State graduate, he holds a master’s degree from Alabama.
