Paul Michalak
Assistant Head Coach / Defensive Coordinator, Trinity University
Paul Michalak began his 17th season on Trinity's football staff in 2025, serving as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach, along with coordinating the program's youth and prospect camps. Under his direction, Trinity's defense has become one of the finest in NCAA Division III, particularly over the last four seasons, during which the Tigers have lost just three regular season games. His defenses have ranked in the top 10 nationally in both scoring and total defense twice in the past four seasons and have finished as a top-25 rushing defense in three of the last four years.
Michalak has coached the conference Defensive Player of the Year five times during his tenure, including Caleb Harmel in both 2021 and 2023. Harmel is one of only six players in Trinity football history to win five different All-American awards. Other defensive standouts under Michalak include All-Americans Luke Packard (2016), Jeremy Irving (2021), Jacob Munoz (2023), and Cade Rabson (2024), whose selection marked a fourth consecutive season a Trinity defender earned All-American honors. In 2021, Michalak was named the AFCA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers back to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2011.
Before Trinity, Michalak spent three seasons at his alma mater, Carthage College, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as a graduate assistant and defensive line coach. As a player at Carthage, he was a four-year letterman from 2002 to 2006 and a member of the 2004 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship team, which finished ranked fifth nationally.
