by Texas High School Coaches Association
Description
This course provides an in-depth look at the fundamental techniques, teaching progressions, and drill structures used by the Texas Tech defensive staff to build complete defensive players. Participants will learn how to design and teach position-specific fundamentals across the defensive line, linebackers, and secondary with an emphasis on efficiency, quality repetitions, and game-day application.
Led by experienced college coaches, the course covers:
-
Defensive Line Play: stance, first-step mechanics, slant drills, pad level control, and efficient movement patterns.
-
Linebacker Development: indie expectations, maximizing drill time through circuit training, and pass-rush counters including the quarterback level rush drill.
-
Teaching Progressions: an eight-point framework for run and pass defense that builds from stance and alignment to contact, separation, and pursuit.
-
Cornerback Play: tackling fundamentals, transition efficiency, takeaway techniques, and situational drills to improve coverage and ball disruption.
-
Safety Play: identity-based fundamentals (talk, run, hit, leverage), communication as the “quarterback” of the defense, and daily drills to reinforce accountability and consistency.
By the end of the course, attendees will leave with practical drills, coaching points, and teaching strategies they can immediately implement to elevate player performance and defensive success at any level.
