Peaking for sprinting, long jump, triple jump and other power based events is the prime focus of this video - although the content will be of use to anyone working with speed and power based athletes in the main. There is also a bonus video which looks into how to plan training during the indoor season so that the athlete is not only optimsied for that but also for the subsequent training phases which lead onto the outdoor season.
The Central Nervous System is referenced in both videos so I thought it would be worth including an article on this which I wrote. This will put into context why evaluation and understanding of the role of the CNS in training planning is crucual.
John Shepherd is an ex-international athlete and now high performance coach. He has coached for the England Team and is a coach mentor for England. He has also worked for Ireland and Belgium athletics and numerous other organistions.
Coach Shepherd has consistently produced high quality athletes and these have achieved various international honours and British age group records, for example. He has caoched a European u20 long jump champion, finalist at the European senior championships and had representatives at the Commonwealth Youth Games, European Youth Olympics, European indoor and World Junior Championships.
Coach Shepherd has also written 6 books on sports, fitness and exercise science and has also edited two national fitness and sports magazines in the UK (ultra-FIT and Outdoor Fitness). He is currently Performance Editor to Athletics Weekly - the UK's if not the world's foremost track & field magazine.
