The Coach

Tom Hays, Associate Head Coach for Kansas Track and Field, has been a driving force behind the program’s success for 18 seasons. Specializing in pole vault and high jump, Hays was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2024 indoor season, marking his third time receiving this prestigious honor (previously in 2021 and 2017).

During the 2024 indoor season, Hays coached two Big 12 champions, Clayton Simms (pole vault) and Devin Loudermilk (high jump), both of whom went on to earn First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He also guided Ashton Barkdull to his first NCAA Championship appearance following a strong performance at the Big 12 Indoor Championship.

Hays has secured the nation’s No. 1 men’s pole vault recruit for three consecutive years, ensuring continued excellence in Kansas’ jumps program. His dedication to athlete development and championship-level coaching has cemented his reputation as one of the nation’s top field event coaches.
