Topic 4: Baserunning

By the time that players are 9 to 12 years old, most of them should have at least a general feel for the fundamentals of smart base running.

Remind your team that heads-up plays on the base paths are often the difference between winning and losing close games. This is especially true at the youth levels as there tends to be a higher number of overthrows, fielding errors and pitches that get by the catcher.

Baserunners should always be paying attention to where the ball is at all times so that they can capitalize on opportunities to advance to the next base. We recommend finding a few minutes during each practice to focus on base running, using the drills in this topic.

We've seen this type of consistent practice go a long way in improve young players' understanding of how to run the bases and in helping them to develop solid instincts on the base paths through experience.

Remember that youth leagues sometimes have different rules around what players can and can't do when it comes to base running. Be sure to research the specific rules of your league before the season begins so you can best utilize practice time and prepare your players to succeed.

Have fun!
