In this presentation I assembled you will find the notes I have taken while studying legendary coach Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense that took the country by storm while he was at TCU. This presentation was created after going thru the old TCU defensive playbook and watching Patterson's clinic presentations on his defense. You will find playart, notes, coaching points, the language used, reads, alignments, and assignments on the 4-2-5 defense along with stunts and coverages. I believe this is a great learning tool for coaches that want to learn more about TCU's 4-2-5 many have tried to copy.
Recently updated: This course shows the responisbilities we assign to our overhang players when the #2 receiver is attached/in the backfield and detached from the core.
The first video applies for when #2 is a tight end, wing, or in the backfrield...This is a video we made to help explain assignments and how our reading the End Man on the Line of Scrimmage drill operates. This video shows what they execute based on the different reads they make. I show this video to my 3 safeties (4-2-5 and 3-3 structures) but can be used for other schemes as well. What do you do when you get a pass read? What about a run to you or away? This video is a great tool for the classroom for players to learn before going out on the field to make your drill time more efficient.
I recently added the other scenario. What do you do when you are an overhang player aligned to a slot receiver that is not attached to the formation's core? The 2nd video details the different routes our overhangs face, as pass players first, as well as their run assignment.
This PowerPoint packages a defense that is both multiple and easy to learn. It details how to present different fronts and what coverages to play behind them. Give it a look, I think that is an interesting way of getting to a common goal of many defensive coordinators...how to present different looks to the Offense while not being overcomplicated for your players so they can play fast and physical.
This simple resource has a clean digitally created video explaining the Power play and how a Spill Defense defends it. Using the GoArmy Edge football app, the video explains what the assignments are for the Offense and what the coaching points are for the defense to defend the play. Great, clean visual to show your team on how to stop one of football's most popular gap scheme run plays.
Have you ever heard former Bama QB's in NFL Press Conferences referring to Cover 7? They are using Nick Saban's language while describing Split Field Man Match Coverage.
In this course you will find Slides with the notes that I have taken while listening to coaches explain this exceptional coverage. You will find my interpretation of the notes with some playart to help understand Cover 7. You will learn about Cones, Brackets, Triangles, and Boxes. Descriptions of the different tools in this very large toolbox are included.
You will find notes on Indian, Switch, Outlaw, Bracket, Connie, CC, Stubbie, Seahawk, Hard and Soft Triangles, Cop, Thief, Trooper, Mod, Meg, Mix, Box, Clamp, and Stump. You can use any or all of this for your own team or at the very least learn some really great ideas from the best football coach to have ever done it.
Attached you will find a PowerPoint I have used over the years explaining the technique of playing defensive line. There are embedded video clips that will help explanation in the classroom and different drills to rep during individual period. You will find coaching points ranging from stance, aiming points, block recognition, visual keys, gaining separation, and different ways of defending kickouts just to name a few.
Do you carry true zone coverage calls in your playbook? They make for a great changeup to man calls or some of the man-match or zone match calls that may also be apart of your menu.
Does your team lack the ability to run in man coverage? I know I have had teams that covered better with good zone eyes vs trying to run with people in man coverage.
Do you prefer some old school, plain Jane, country / spot drop zone coverage to some of the more complicated and more difficult to learn schemes? Even though the assignments are easier to explain the kids may need help seeing how different route concepts match up to the zone call.
Tired of getting picked on with pick routes on the goal-line? How about letting those guys cross and sitting pretty on that flat route to the front pylon?
True Zone Coverages can be a small or big part of your defense. I created this video to serve as a visual example to show my team in the classroom of how we squeeze the soft spots of zone coverage, defend route runners that enter our zone and pass them off to our neighbors.
In this course you will find a video detailing our true zone coverage Cover 4, and two 8 man coverages from our odd front that we call 5 Up and 5 Down. These are some of my favorite calls that have been good to us on just about every down and distance. Not only is there playart for each call but I have also included a Madden style creation of different route concepts vs the calls.
In this course you will also find a video detailing our Goal-Line zone coverage call, Bear Fence, again with playart and a video showing how the coverage operates vs actual routes.
There is a space in your playbook for true zone coverage.
Teach the fundamentals of pursuing the football, the most important aspect of playing team defense. Learn run assignments while conditioning in practice. This simple video gives your team a visual of how the pursuit drill should be run and what angles are necessary to play solid team defense. Identify who your force player is and who is supporting him. Teach kids what the near hip is of the ball carrier. Run fits...get after it!
I created this fun and stylish PDF for our 2 Read call. Included is a long PDF that you can scroll thru with the way we handle different formations with this Split Field coverage. This downloadable breaks down the assignments for our players based on what the offense is presenting. This is our version of Palms/Cover 2 or whatever word you want to use for 2 high safety pattern matching defense. At the top you will see our checks with images that explain our hand signals to determine how we handle different splits of receivers based on the receiving surface we get. Not only do we include our checks for different flanks but run assignments are included as well. Enjoy.
I have been running the attack style of the 3-3 Stack Defense for many seasons. I have used it both as the entire scheme for my team as well as a supplementary package. This course offers everything you need to implement the attack style version of this odd front that makes offenses tremble. RUN THE STACK!
You will find included videos, images, and downloads for:
1. Alignments
2. Front Variations, Stemming, Moving to Other Fronts
3. Coaching Points for Slant Technique
4. Stunts
5. Coverages
6. Personalized Playbooks by Position
7. Personalized Wristbands by Position
8. Play-Art
9. Extensive PowerPoint about the Defense
Use this course's video to teach safe and effective tackling. I have cutup different video clips to assemble a one stop shop for teaching youth tackling. This video includes the approach, different tackling situations, and the finish of each. Get better at coaching the fundamentals of tackling the ball carrier, necessary for any great defense!
This video is the perfect tool for both novice and experienced secondary coaches. I have coached defensive backs for a decade on top of my own playing career. This is a teaching tool for my coaches, players, and great for me to review before heading out on the field to help with coaching points and simply spacing out specific drills. When I identify a team need I check back to this video to see how to satisfy it. "Scratch where it itches." Within this course, you will be able to organize your individual period for the entire summer and season. The video includes warmup drills, turnover drills, everyday footwork drills, ball breaks, tracking, tackling, man coverage, zone coverage, and other agility drills for both Cornerbacks and Safeties. I spent most of Covid's Quarantine compiling both College and High School tape to assemble this. You will not be disappointed!
The formation is Trips. The 10 yard out is the first down throw. Your safety isn't getting there in time. Your Sam/Nickel/Strong Safety is a flat defender that knows he has the first to the flat. The #3 receiver is running to his zone and that eye candy draws down the flat defender leaving a big window for your deep safety working to close it. Try the Sail technique depicted in this short video.
This video shows playart defending a fade by #1, a deep out by #2, a fast #3 to the flat. The video shows what issues can arise if we do not play proper technique as a flat defender. Help your deep safety out with the Sail Technique!
This video illustrates how to defend the hitch-corner "Smash" concept with Cover 3 true spot drop zone defense, compared with how the concept is defended with a man match version of Cover 3 we call Sky, compared with how Sky coverage plays out with a "short" call made by our cornerback. Included in this short video is playart and also a digital recreation of the skill players moving on the field.
