David Vanterpool is a rising star and will be an NBA Head Coach in the near future! David just left the Portland Trailblazers after 7 seasons to join Ryan Saunders with the Minnesota Timberwolves as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. David’s presentation showed an outstanding 3-on-3 close-out drill, he also teaches a “random transition” 5-on-5 drill. These are excellent for you and your team. David’s presentation stressed the importance of developing relationships with your players. After watching this video, you’ll agree it’s no surprise why he is one of the hottest upcoming names in the NBA with a very bright future ahead.
NBA Transition, Early or Quick offense that you can use when all 5 defenders are back and matched up. These are quick hitters with one-word verbal calls made by your point guard or the coach. As a bonus, Brendan shares a great Side OB play for late game situations, especially when the defense is switching. The other situation is what we call “Corner”, the intersection of the baseline and the sideline. The purpose of this video is to make you “think”
Chris Oliver is a curious and inquisitive coach by nature, his method of teaching is built around asking questions and the learning then takes place. “Every time I hear Chris speak he stimulates my thinking. His teaching style is highly innovative and like nothing that I’ve seen in my 45+ years of coaching. That’s why I’m thrilled to add Chris to our Faculty and be a leader in our “Coaching U On Campus” program. This is a no-brainer for any D1 Mens or Women’s program!” – Brendan Suhr
Steve Clifford is one of the most respected coaches in the NBA and easily one of the BEST teachers in the GAME! Close your eyes and think about the best teacher you have ever had at any level… That’s Steve Clifford. The “Flash Game” can fit into any offensive philosophy or system you currently run. In this video he teaches several concepts that many have never seen before, he is hands down one of the best clinicians we have ever had at Coaching U.
Ryan Saunders is the youngest Head Coach in the NBA, but he is mature beyond his years. Ryan’s got a great coaching pedigree, his leadership style and teaching ability is off the charts! In this session, he taught a “Family of Plays” from Chin, Open and Hawk sets with Counters, and then expanded by teaching Shot Values and Concepts. Ryan is a great young coach that the coaches in attendance and our staff were excited to learn from!

Ettore Messina is a future Hall of Famer and without question one of the 5 best coaches in the world today. Ettore is an extraordinary teacher of the game and a fabulous in-game coach. Truly a master of adjustments, Ettore is one of a few coaches that I know who can do an entire clinic on defending screens. Basically, the way Golden State plays. Ettore taught everything on how to defend pin downs; wing-post splits and his Q&A session is like another clinic in itself. As always, Ettore Messina is must-see!
Sacramento Kings Assistant Coach Roy Rana is a dynamic teacher who brought incredible content in his first visit as a speaker at Coaching U. Roy relates his experiences coaching the Canadian National Team as well as coaching the “World Team” at the Nike Hoops Summit each year with the time challenges involved with each in preparing a team. Before recently taking over as the Head Coach of the Sydney Kings of the NBL, Will Weaver was one of the brightest young assistant coaches in the NBA. Will has been on the coaching staff’s of the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets where he worked with brilliant coaches on a daily basis. Will is also an assistant coach for the Australian Boomers (Australia’s Senior Men’s National Team) as well as the Head Coach of the Long Island Nets of the NBA’s G-League. As a young Head Coach who has coached both the Nigerian and Angolan National Teams you must have a high level of competency and credibility. Will Voigt has both and has led his teams to success while coaching at the highest level of international competition and the 2016 Olympics. Will Hardy is an Assistant Coach with the San Antonio Spurs who I’ve personally watched for years, he is an excellent teacher with great presence, poise, voice and demeanor. You will be blown away by his teaching style and confidence. He shares a great presentation on “Preparation” which is modeled after his own journey through the film room and background in player development that led to him earning the trust of Gregg Popovich to promote him to a “first row” Assistant Coach as well as naming Will to his coaching staff for the USA Basketball National Team this fall in China at the World Cup. In this video he tells you how the Spurs prepare in preseason training camp, during the year, and on gameday shootarounds. The key is to keep it simple and consistent. We can ALL learn from Will Hardy’s message he shares in this video!
