Juan Nieves, is a distinguished figure in professional baseball, both as a former Major League pitcher and a seasoned coach. His career is marked by significant achievements and contributions to the sport.​

Playing Career:

Nieves began his ascent in baseball at Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut, where he showcased exceptional talent with a 19–1 win-loss record and a 1.05 ERA during his senior year. This performance led to his signing with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1983. He made his MLB debut on April 10, 1986, and quickly made history by pitching a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles on April 15, 1987, becoming the second-youngest player to achieve this feat and the first for the Brewers. His promising career as a pitcher was unfortunately cut short due to a shoulder injury after three seasons. ​

Coaching Career:

Transitioning into coaching, Nieves brought his on-field experience to various teams:

  • New York Yankees (1992–1996): He began as a minor league pitching instructor, laying the groundwork for his coaching philosophy.

  • Chicago White Sox (1999–2007): Nieves served as a minor league pitching coach before being promoted to the major league staff as the bullpen coach, contributing to the development of a strong pitching roster. ​

  • Boston Red Sox (2013–2015): As the pitching coach, he played a pivotal role in leading the team to a World Series championship in 2013, with the pitching staff achieving the second-lowest ERA in the American League that season. ​

  • Miami Marlins (2016–2018): Nieves continued his coaching journey as the pitching coach, focusing on developing the team's pitching talent. ​

  • Detroit Tigers (2021–Present): He currently serves as the assistant pitching coach, bringing his extensive experience to mentor and develop the Tigers' pitching staff. ​
