This is written by Coach Todd O'Neal who was so inspired after seeing the movie HOOSIERS that he started to work on Leadership Principles that were taught during the movie by Coach Norman Dale played by the actor Gene Hackman. The movie is about the Hickory Huskers and their season journey to the Indiana State Finals where they played a huge powerhouse South Bend Central. This is a true story of the Milan basketball team of 1954. Many lessons can be learned when you watch the movie and read through these notes.
Lessons
The Coach
Coach O'Neal has been around the game for 20 years as a Coach and has won 648 games in the process. He has coached multiple State and Region Championship teams and one NACA National Championship team. It has been a storied career that has been one of building programs, players, and people. He started the program at Lancaster Christian Academy in Smyrna, Tennessee and in three years he won the State Championship. He did the same at Gabriel Christian Academy in Smyrna, Tennessee and won the girls and boys State Championships in TVAC. He developed a great prep program at GCA and sent several players to play college basketball.
The last four years he was with Freedom High School in Orlando, Florida where he took a program that was stuggling and built it into a winner- winning 49 games in 4 seasons in 7A basketball in Central Florida. During the summer he moved back to Savannah, GA where he will start another new program in the Savannah Jaguars- who will play their first high school season ever in the 2025-26 season. This is Coach O'Neals specialty. He will develop them into a Championship Program very soon. Coach O'Neal learned from the best with Coach Don Meyer who was his mentor until his death a few years ago.
