The Coach
Coach Claude Mathis — Head Football Coach, DeSoto High School
Current Coach of the Year, Coach Mathis first became DeSoto’s head coach in 2008, later served as the running backs coach at SMU (2015), and led Marshall High School in 2017–2018 to two district championships and a quarterfinal appearance. He returned to DeSoto in 2019, where the program has since won two state championships with “a whole bunch of success.”
A former running back himself, Mathis is big on development and everyday fundamentals, ball security, vision with eyes up, north–south explosion, and finishing. His progression includes cone series, bags and chutes for knee lift and balance, jump stops and slide steps to stay tight to the hole, plus dip-and-rip and the blast drill for contact courage and splitting defenders. His RB rooms at DeSoto and SMU have featured multiple 1,000-yard rushers and high-level feet/explosion examples (including Xavier Jones, noted for elite footwork and burst).
