Constructing the Pocket Techniques to Protect the QB - Tim Keane

Description

In this clinic, Tim Keane lays out a comprehensive and detailed approach to building a clean, controlled pocket through both individual technique and unit cohesion. Keane starts by unpacking the foundational philosophy behind protecting the quarterback, emphasizing the importance of communication, clarity of purpose, and alignment across the offensive line. He dives deep into the structural elements that define a strong pocket—breaking down how it’s formed, how it’s maintained, and why it’s the lifeblood of any passing game.

From there, Keane shifts into the technical side: sets, hand usage, and posture are covered in depth, along with the tools linemen must develop to win their one-on-ones and stay connected in protection. He provides a clear look at pass protection mechanics in isolation and within the context of unit play, supported by practical drill work and film cut-ups that illustrate how to train these techniques on the field. Concepts like the "squeeze" and "slam" are broken down into actionable teaching points to help players manage space, anchor the middle, and respond to rush threats in real time. This course is a must-watch for coaches looking to construct a pocket that consistently gives the quarterback time and confidence to operate.

The Coach

Tim Keane is the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Boise State, where he has helped engineer one of the nation’s most consistent and productive rushing attacks. Since taking over the offensive line in 2021, Keane has coached three All-Americans and guided the Broncos to nine all-conference selections up front. His units have ranked in the top 30 nationally in rushing offense for three consecutive seasons (2022–24), including a standout 2024 campaign where Boise State finished top 10 in scoring, total offense, rushing, and first downs.

Keane’s 2024 offensive line, led by second-team All-American Kage Casey and All-Mountain West picks Ben Dooley and Mason Randolph, cleared the way for unanimous All-American Ashton Jeanty, who finished just 27 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ FBS single-season rushing record. Boise State captured back-to-back Mountain West championships in 2023 and 2024 and earned a berth in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Fiesta Bowl.

Before Boise State, Keane coached at UC Davis, where he was part of a Big Sky championship run in 2018, and at College of Idaho, where his offenses consistently ranked among the NAIA’s best in total offense and efficiency.
