Dan Jackson - DB Techniques / Coverages to Take Away Opponents Top WR

Description

Defensive backs have very demanding and challenging tasks every game, to cover and contain the opposing teams' fastest and most agile players. One poor play by your defensive back can cost your team a chunk of yards if not a touchdown. It is the defensive back's responsibility to ensure touchdowns are not scored when a defensive lineman or linebacker misses a tackle.

Defensive backs can develop certain techniques to help them contain wide receivers, making contact off the line or within five yards to disrupt their route running and timing with the quarterback. It's important to keep your eyes on the receiver's hips, keep your feet moving, and hands up ready to go.

In this course, Coach Dan Jackson gives us a look into Defensive Back Techniques and Teaching Progressions at Northern Illinois University as well as coverages to help take away an opposing WR threat. Everything from team culture to players' mindset to coverages are covered here.

The Coach

Coach Dan Jackson - Northern Illinois University

Dan Jackson joined the NIU coaching staff in March of 2020 as cornerbacks and co-special teams coordinator with a wealth of experience in all three phases of the game. The Huskie cornerbacks benefitted from Jackson’s mentorship in his first season. Cornerback Jordan Gandy earned second-team All-MAC honors after leading the team in tackles with 41 and tallying an interception.

Jackson came to NIU after spending the previous eight seasons on staff at South Dakota State. He played a key role in the success of the South Dakota State football program, helping the Jackrabbits to eight consecutive Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances. A 12-year coaching veteran with experience in all three phases of the game, Jackson began his tenure with the Jackrabbits in 2012, coaching the SDSU cornerbacks. During the Jackrabbits’ 2012 playoff season, Jackson coached a secondary that allowed just nine passing touchdowns, while collecting 13 interceptions.
