Evaluation & Development of OL - Phil Trautwein

Description

In this comprehensive clinic, Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein dives deep into his system for evaluating and developing offensive linemen. With a focus on identifying and cultivating the traits that translate to high-level performance, Coach Trautwein breaks down the essential physical and mental components every successful lineman must possess.

He begins with the "little things" that separate good players from great ones—highlighting his approach to measurables, evaluation criteria, and core traits like base, bend, balance, burst, and finish. Coach Trautwein also emphasizes the importance of toughness and intelligence, giving coaches a framework to assess both film and character.

The second half of the course transitions into player development, offering a detailed look at weekly prep, drill menus, and progression for both the run and pass game. Through film, drill cut-ups, and teaching points, this course provides practical tools and insights that coaches at any level can implement immediately.

Whether you're building an evaluation model or sharpening your developmental process, Coach Trautwein delivers a complete blueprint for producing elite offensive linemen.

Lessons

The Coach

Phil Trautwein is in his sixth season as Penn State’s offensive line coach, overseeing one of the most productive and NFL-ready units in the country. Since 2020, seven Nittany Lion offensive linemen have been selected in the NFL Draft—tied for second nationally—including 2024 first-rounder Olumuyiwa Fashanu, who earned consensus All-America honors and was named Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. Under Trautwein, Penn State’s 2024 offensive line helped the team lead the Big Ten in rushing (202.3 YPG) and produced two 1,000-yard rushers for the first time in school history.

Over his last seven seasons between Penn State and Boston College, Trautwein has coached 31 all-conference linemen. At Boston College, his 2019 line ranked third nationally in sacks allowed and helped the Eagles average 267.8 rushing yards per game—fifth-best in the FBS. His players included first-round picks Chris Lindstrom (2019) and Zion Johnson (2022), and multiple NFL-caliber linemen including Tyler Vrabel and Alec Lindstrom.

Trautwein has also coached in the College Football Playoff and multiple New Year’s Six bowls. A two-time All-SEC tackle and national champion at Florida, he brings elite pedigree as both a player and developer of offensive line talent.
