Garret McGuire - Building a 3rd Down Menu
by Texas High School Coaches Association
Description
Learn how Texas Tech built one of the most dangerous third-down attacks in the country, ranking top 10 nationally in conversion percentage and explosive plays. Coach McGuire, Texas Tech running backs coach, breaks down the program's full third down system, how they classify down and distance into short, medium, long, and extra long, why third down is a personnel-driven down, and how they build every call around their quarterback's confidence and comfort.
You'll get a quick overview of how Texas Tech identifies matchups to attack, self-scouts their own tendencies, and structures their weekly install process from Monday game planning through Friday's fast-paced walkthrough. Coach McGuire then installs several real third down pass concepts pulled straight from Red Raiders game film, drawing up each route, protection rule, and quarterback read live so you can follow along play-by-play.
Whether you're refining your third-down package or building one from scratch, this session gives you a proven, game-tested framework for turning your toughest down into a scoring opportunity.

Garret McGuire
Running Backs Coach, Texas Tech University
Garret McGuire enters his second season on the Texas Tech coaching staff as running backs coach, working alongside his father, head coach Joey McGuire. He is one of the youngest assistant coaches in college football, earning recognition on the 2024 AFCA 35 Under 35 list and 247Sports' 2023 30-Under-30 ranking of top young assistants.
McGuire played quarterback and special teams at Baylor from 2017 to 2020, earning first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors twice and serving as team captain his senior year. He graduated with a degree in health, kinesiology, and leisure studies in 2020.
He began his coaching career with the Carolina Panthers as a coaching assistant in 2021, later promoted to offensive assistant in 2022. From 2023 to 2024, McGuire served as wide receivers coach at Nebraska, helping the Huskers reach a bowl game for the first time since 2016 and contributing to back-to-back top-25 recruiting classes.
McGuire joined Texas Tech's offensive staff in December 2024. As running backs coach, he has helped lead one of the nation's top third-down offenses, ranking eighth nationally in third-down conversion percentage and first in third-down explosive plays. His offensive philosophy centers on personnel-driven play-calling, building complementary route concepts, and giving quarterbacks pre-installed answers against a range of coverages.
