Johnathan Wilson joined head coach Scott Abell's staff in January 2025 as Rice's running backs coach. He was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football's 2026 "40 Under 40" list.

Wilson came to Rice after two seasons at Stephen F. Austin (SFA), where he coached running backs including Qualan Jones, who ranked fourth in the Southland Conference with 779 rushing yards—SFA's highest single-season rushing total since 2014. He moved to the collegiate coaching ranks in 2024 after three seasons as head coach at his alma mater, Klein Forest High School, taking over the program in 2020 and snapping a 19-game losing streak in his very first game as head coach, a 28-13 win over Goose Creek Memorial.

A four-year letterman wide receiver at the University of Kansas (2007–2010), Wilson caught 119 passes for 1,641 yards over his college career; he was recruited to Kansas by John Reagan, who is now Rice's offensive coordinator. After graduating, Wilson began his coaching career at Klein Oak High School in 2012, helping lead the Panthers to two Region 2 semifinal appearances and a state championship game berth in 2014 before moving to Klein Forest in 2020.

Wilson and his wife, Cheri, have two children, Weston and Winter.
