Kevin Kane: Outside Linebacker Play

Linebackers play an important role in any defense. In the outside linebacker's role, he is responsible for containing the end to ensure that a run does not escape. He is also responsible for protecting against the pass, often assigned to cover tight ends. Against tight ends, the strong-side linebacker must be agile enough to move off the edge and take on blockers, strong enough to attack the run, and have the power to take on the blockers.
