Mike Rutenberg is in his second season as the linebackers coach for the New York Jets, having joined Robert Saleh's staff in 2021. In 2022, he marked his 13th season in the NFL and second as a position coach. During the Jets' coaching stint at the 2022 Senior Bowl, Rutenberg served as the National Team's defensive coordinator, leading them to a win by limiting the American Team to 10 points, 120 passing yards, and a 56.6 passer rating. In his first season with the Jets, he guided Pro Bowl veteran C.J. Mosley and third-year player Quincy Williams to career-best performances, with both linebackers achieving over 100 tackles each.

Before joining the Jets, Rutenberg was the passing game specialist for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, contributing to a defense that ranked fourth in passing defense and top 10 in completion percentage and passer rating allowed. His coaching career includes seven seasons in college football with UCLA and New Mexico State and a stint as the defensive coordinator at the University of San Diego. Rutenberg's NFL career began with Washington, where he started as a player personnel intern and later worked as a football assistant to Head Coach Joe Gibbs. He also had roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including assistant defensive backs coach, defensive assistant, and assistant linebackers coach.
