Description
Pass Protection: Preparing During the Week for Success on Gameday
In this course, Coach Stephen Sorrells, Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach for the Edmonton Elks, takes you inside the weekly process he uses to build an effective pass protection plan from the ground up. Rather than focusing only on scheme or technique, Coach Sorrells walks through the full preparation cycle—how to study opponents, teach protection concepts, structure meetings, organize drills, and prepare players to perform with confidence on game day.
Coach Sorrells begins by outlining his offensive line philosophy and the style of play that drives everything his unit does: toughness, physicality, controlled violence, relentless finishing, and elite protection. From there, he breaks down why pass protection is one of the hardest jobs in football and explains the importance of mastering a foundational “fastball” before layering in changeups through varied sets, hand usage, and disruption techniques.
A major focus of the course is the weekly game-planning process. Coaches will learn how to build a defensive line synopsis, study pass rush tendencies, identify blitz patterns, and tailor pass sets and hand usage to specific opponents. Sorrells details how he separates teaching for tackles versus interior players, how he prepares his centers to lead protection communication, and how he structures each day of the week with a clear protection emphasis.
You’ll also get an in-depth look at how Edmonton organizes its practice periods, walkthroughs, blitz pickup drills, meeting structure, red zone preparation, and final day review. The course finishes with practical advice for game day—how to respond to new pressures, reinforce communication, and help players trust their preparation and play fast.
This is an outstanding clinic for offensive line coaches, coordinators, and anyone looking to build a more intentional, detailed, and repeatable system for teaching pass protection.

The Coach
Coach Stephen Sorrells
Coach Stephen Sorrells is the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League. A veteran offensive line coach with experience at both the professional and collegiate levels, Sorrells previously spent six seasons coaching the offensive line for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. His coaching career also includes stops at Southern Methodist University, Pearl River Community College, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Kenyon College, Occidental College, and Faulkner University.
During his time in Edmonton, Sorrells helped build one of the CFL’s most productive offensive fronts. His unit paved the way for a league-leading 2,365 rushing yards and 6.2 yards per carry, while surrendering a CFL-low 29 sacks.
Before entering the CFL, Sorrells helped lead several major program turnarounds. As Kenyon College’s offensive coordinator, he joined a program that had lost 24 consecutive games and had not posted a winning season since 1989. In his first season, Kenyon finished 6–4. At UAB, he was part of a staff that helped the Blazers become bowl eligible for the first time in 10 years and only the second time in program history.
Earlier in his career, Sorrells helped Edgewood Academy produce consecutive 9–1 seasons and a 2004 AISA Class 3A state runner-up finish. As offensive coordinator at Fort Dale Academy, his offense established school single-season records for total offense, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.
A graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery, Sorrells earned a bachelor’s degree in Education and Sports Leadership. His coaching is built around detailed preparation, physical offensive line play, protection communication, and developing players who perform confidently when the game is on the line.
