After a standout career as a guard and discus thrower at St. Mary’s High School, Tony Franks played football and competed in track at UC Davis. He got his start in coaching as an offensive line coach for the Aggies’ freshman football team in 1981. He stayed at UC Davis for another three years before taking over the St Mary’s Rams in 1984, where he remained four years before a three-year stint at Santa Clara as the defensive coordinator. He then returned to UC Davis, where he served as an offensive-line and linebacker coach, in addition to being a recruiting coordinator, for 12 years. In 2001 Franks returned to his high school alma mater, St. Mary’s, building the program into a perennial playoff contender.
