Return to Sport Following Foot & Ankle Injuries

Description

Stop the Guessing Game: Implementing a Criterion and Evidence-Based Functional Performance Testing Algorithm in Foot and Ankle Injuries

Course Description: This course provides an evidence-based, Functional Performance Testing Algorithm (FTA) specifically designed for the foot and ankle complex. It addresses the current lack of consensus and standardized PPTs for functional readiness following foot and ankle musculoskeletal injuries, drawing on extensive literature from knee, hip, and shoulder return-to-activity protocols. Participants will learn foundational lower leg physical performance competencies and capacities necessary for various activities, from daily tasks to high-level athletics. The course will review current evidence and guidelines for PPTs, discussing their validity and reliability for return to function assessments. Clinical case examples will be integrated throughout to aid in knowledge translation and real-world application. The goal is to provide a framework with excellent translation and application across diverse clinical practice settings and patient demographics.

Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Analyze the importance of functional testing algorithms for determining return to function readiness in patients with foot and ankle musculoskeletal injuries
  2. Evaluate the evidence on the appropriate use of physical performance tests (PPTs) to determine readiness for return to function post foot and ankle musculoskeletal injurDevelop a criterion, algorithmic, and evidence-based approach for determining patient readiness and clearance for return to jogging, plyometrics, and higher-level activities
  3. Synthesize practical recommendations for implementing the Return to Function Physical Performance Testing Algorithm for the Foot and Ankle Complex in clinical practice, considering the patient’s demographic, functional capacity, and specific pathology
