Matt Aguero
Head Cross Country and Track Coach, Poteau High School (Oklahoma)
Matt Aguero is the head cross country and track coach at Poteau High School in Oklahoma, having just completed his first year in the role. A Poteau native, he returned to his hometown to be closer to family after spending 17 years coaching at the collegiate level, six of those at the NCAA Division II level and the majority at the NAIA level, most recently as head coach at Oklahoma City University (OCU) for seven years.
As a collegiate coach, Aguero's teams won five NAIA Cross Country National titles and had two runner-up finishes in indoor and outdoor track. His teams finished in the top five nationally in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track a combined 15 times. He was named NAIA Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019, and was named Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year nine times. He directed 38 individual and relay national champions and coached multiple NAIA national record holders.
Among the athletes he coached was Aria Barrini, a three-time marathon champion in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and a 2017 Olympic Trials marathon qualifier.
Aguero was himself an NAIA All-American while competing at Minot State, where he set the school record in the marathon. He also set the school record in the marathon at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, where he was an all-region runner and a three-time national track and field qualifier. He has run more than 30 marathons, including Boston, Chicago, and New York, and won the Oklahoma City Marathon in 2005.
In addition to coaching high school, Aguero also coaches junior high at Poteau.
