The Coach

Mike Scannell is an elite distance running coach, former world-class athlete, and the mastermind behind Olympic medalist Grant Fisher’s historic achievements. With a career spanning over three decades, Scannell’s "Mechanic" coaching philosophy emphasizes a partnership where he serves as the expert technician while the athlete "drives" the performance. His unique methodology, centered on the "Breath, Blood, and Brain," has produced remarkable results, most notably guiding Fisher to two bronze medals (5,000m and 10,000m) at the 2024 Paris Olympics, multiple indoor world records, and six American records.

A formidable competitor in his own right, Scannell boasts personal bests of 2:16 in the marathon and 29:02 in the 10K. He is a two-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier (1988 and 1992) and has represented the USA as a member of the 1988 10K Champions and the 2007 USATF National Champions Team XC squad.

Scannell’s coaching impact extends seamlessly from the professional level to high school athletics. He served as a USATF National Team Coach for Triathlon from 1993 to 2000 and has developed over 40 individual high school state champions and multiple Footlocker national champions. Recently, he led Hamilton High School (AZ) to back-to-back State XC Championships in 2023 and 2024, setting Arizona's fastest-ever cumulative team time.
Known for his tactical innovations like the "Three-Step Move" and his focus on injury prevention through optimized, "mild" training volume, Scannell prioritizes stress adaptation over "junk miles." Outside of his illustrious coaching career, he has successfully served as the CEO of a nationwide distribution company since 2000.
