Raithel Martin - Sports Medicine in Cross Country
by CCCAT
Description
Most cross country programs don't have an athletic trainer at every practice or meet. Raithel Martin covers what coaches need most from recognizing and treating heat illness, spotting common running injuries, preventing them through proper footwear and gait, and applying basic taping on-site with video demonstrations for ankle and shin splint taping.
What You'll Learn
- The three stages of heat illness and how to recognize each one
- On-site treatment for dehydration, heat exhaustion, and exertional heat stroke
- When to send an athlete to the ER or call EMS
- Return-to-play timelines after heat illness
- Common acute injuries and overuse injuries
- The wet foot test for arch type and matching it to the right shoe
- Gait issues like over-striding, heel-striking, and knock-knee running
- A cadence drill to correct over-striding
- Step-by-step ankle and shin splint taping
- Managing athletes who play multiple sports in the same season
- Recommended summer strength training frequency and recovery days
- Using swimming and aqua jogging as low-impact cross-training
Martin closes with a simple rule, watch athletes closely, since they often hide symptoms, and treat proper footwear, gait, and hydration as the first line of defense against injury.

The Coach
Raithel Martin, MS, ATC
Head Girls Athletic Trainer, Andrews High School
Raithel Martin, known to her athletes as "Ray," is the head girls athletic trainer at Andrews High School, where she is entering her third year on staff.
Raithel earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of the Incarnate Word, followed by a Master of Science in Education, with a focus in exercise science, from the University of the Southwest. During her undergraduate studies, she worked with the U.S. armed forces at their basic training camps in San Antonio, where her gait-training work with basic trainees helped reduce overuse injuries and kept more recruits on the track instead of in the infirmary.
With five years of experience as an athletic trainer, Raithel has worked at both the university and high school levels, including as assistant athletic trainer at the University of the Southwest, and athletic trainer roles at Permian High School and Midland Legacy High School, before joining Andrews ISD.
Outside of work, Raithel is married and has a young son who has become a familiar presence around the athletic programs, often accompanying her to practices and treatment sessions.
