Head Boys' Cross Country Coach, Canyon High School

Wes Kirton is the head boys' cross country coach at Canyon High School. He has been coaching since 2002, putting him at 22 years of experience at the time of this presentation, during which his teams have qualified for the state meet 72% of the time, including several third-place finishes early in his tenure and six years spent as the second-smallest 5A program in the state. Kirton describes his coaching philosophy as shaped by several influential figures and frameworks.

Kirton has been married for 25 years, and his son, who runs in the program himself, was entering his junior year at the time of this talk. Kirton also mentions navigating a cancer diagnosis around 2020, after which he says he refocused his coaching approach around the "push versus pull" training philosophy that is the subject of his presentation.
