- This is a negative step. The right foot drops back towards the left foot, so that the right foot is now directly under the right hips. This creates an efficient SHIN ANGLE at the ankle joint (angle between foot and lower leg).
  
  Creating efficient SHIN ANGLE has a mechanical advantage to propel the body forward explosively.
  
  The right foot is now the push off leg and the left leg will cross in front of the right. This means that the left arm will aggressively drive backwards as the right arm aggressively drives forward.
  
  The Drop Step allows the hips to open, creating proper direction towards 2nd Base. It also allows Newton's First Law to apply (an object in motion stays in motion).
  
  “We want to be moving into the sprint!”
  
  The Drop Step may be the most effective technique when stealing a base!
