Lesson 14:
The Ram Shield
Clinch fighting, tackles and takedowns are common grappling tactics used to control and immobilize someone. The Ram Shield is a techniuqe that allows you to deliver a very powerful thrusting strike towards your opponets vitals to crush and stop them in their tracks without having to go to the ground. Unlike conventional takedown defenses in which fighters use a sprawl technique to avoid a force on force collision with a grappler, the Ram Shield allows a fighter to stay on their feet and cause damage to a grappler for their efforts. Also by staying upright this allows the fighter to immediately deliver a counter attack, where as sprawling does not. It's quite common for a charging in opponent to really hurt themselves when meeting a shield force on force. The Ram Shield is an important tool to possess if your wanting to make your clinch fighting game easier, more deceptive, expend less energy, create more options to strike and use counter grappling and balance attacks. This can be used with both two arms and a single limbs. A two arm shield usually is going to be your more powerful of the two variations, because of using more body mass transfered into the target. However, the single arm shield is often going to be more depended on when your in the mist of deploying a technique already such as a strike, and needing to recover quickly to avoid a clinch or takedown due to having less reaction time. Thre are some scenarios in which you may have to use the Ram Shield to ride out an opponents forward momentum and use it as a barrier to follow them to the ground. If this happens get into a position to control your opponent and get to a hit.
