Next, he breaks down the Roles and Responsibilities for both the Head Coach and the Players. For the head coach, a few of the responsibilities he points out are: be available to players and opportunities, spare no expenses, and make football more visible and high profile. For the players, a few of the responsibilities he points out are: it takes everyone to make a championship team, team first, and follow the rules and program of the school. He then details out the importance of the Football Office. This needs to be open to your coaching staff and players and should be a friendly environment, not a harsh one like you would see on TV. In this part 2 of the 2 part course, Coach Kevin Swift details out the rest of the information you need for a powerful team culture to develop your team. He breaks down what makes his culture great and you can emulate these, and also come up with things that apply directly to your team to help you build up your team. He details out the Foundations of the Program, what Zero Period is, Gut Checks, and Utilizing the Summer. If you are a coach who wants to learn more about buffing your your culture and development game, then this is the course for you!
He begins the course talking on the Foundations of the Program. He is a big believer that most of the culture and development happens in the weightroom. It is where you make each player better and spend some of the most time. It is your job to make it exciting and uplifting and make your players challenge each other and want to be there. Utilize a record board where it shows the strongest lifts and challenge your team members to break those records. This will motivate and inspire your athletes to do better and create healthy competition. If you want to learn more about Foundations for your team, then this course is a must.
Next, he speaks on the Zero Period and details out exactly what it is. Zero Period begins at 6:45 and is basically an extra class for the students in the day. Every football player on his team must be enrolled in the Zero Period, but it is not explicit to only football players. He details out the 6 Core Areas of Zero Period that you need to know in order to enhance your culture and development. These 6 Core Areas include: Lifting, Speed/Agilitiy, Nutrition, Leadership, Culture Development, and Academic Support. After speaking on the Zero Period, he breaks down the Gut Checks. Their Gut Checks days are used to teach the athletes how to deal with adversity. This will ensure that your team will learn how to play and act as a championship team because they go through the adversity together and thrive together. These Gut Checks happen during the Zero Period and is basically an hour long agility circuit with conditioning. This also comes in the form of 2-a-days.
