Lessons

The Coach

Distance Running Coach | Cross Country & Track Coach | Coaching Educator

Shawn Siemers is a veteran cross country and track coach with 20 years of coaching experience at Texas 6A schools. Throughout his career, he has developed successful distance-running programs and helped athletes and teams reach the highest levels of Texas high school competition. His coaching résumé includes nine consecutive cross country state qualifications, individual state champions, and multiple state-level performances in distance events.

Siemers has coached athletes in events ranging from the 400 meters through cross country, with a particular passion for distance running and developing athletes through thoughtful, purpose-driven training. His athletes have competed successfully at the district, regional, and state levels, including a 2022 UIL 6A state champion in the 1600 meters.

Beyond competition results, Shawn focuses on helping coaches understand why training works—not simply what workouts to prescribe. Drawing from both his coaching experience and his previous career designing software systems, he developed the concept of “Training Architecture,” a framework for connecting athlete needs, training objectives, workouts, progression, and evidence-based adjustments.

Through his coaching education work and Run By Numbers, Shawn shares practical insights designed to help distance coaches build programs they understand, evaluate, and adapt throughout the season. His approach emphasizes thoughtful decision-making, athlete development, team culture, and creating training systems that fit the athletes in front of the coach.
