    Sacrifice Bunting

     view description
    • Set-up:
      • The batter will start at home plate, in her hitting stance, in the cage, or on the field
      • The coach will be in front of the batter, toward the pitching mound, about 15 feet away to start.

      To get into bunt position:

      1) The batter will pivot both feet so she is facing the pitcher.

      2) Slide the top hand up to the part of the bat where the barrel starts to get wider and the bottom hand slides up to the middle of the grip.

      3) Both elbows are pointing toward the ground.

      4) The bat will be angled up at about 2 o'clock for a right-hander.

      5) Weight will be more on the front foot.

      6) The bat should be held near eye level. That way, if the pitch is above the bat, it is a ball. If it is lower than the bat, the batter should bend her knees to get to the ball. Do not drop the barrel of the bat to reach for the ball

      7) When the bat is making contact with the ball, make sure the batters are "catching" the ball with the bat by giving a little as the ball hits the bat. Batters should move the bat back toward their bodies as they receive the pitch, so the bunt will be soft. The bunt needs to be soft so the fielders have to run in for the ball. That is what will advance the runner successfully.
      • The coach will pitch the ball in softly and the batter bunts it.
      • Between every bunt the batter should return to her starting position for hitting and then pivot to bunting position.
      • Let the batters take 10-15 bunts each.
      • Have a bunting competition to see how many bunts the batters can keep fair out of 10 pitches, or give each batter five bunts and see which batter can produce the softest bunt.
