Lesson 34:
A Situation 17 Tag Up
Situation # 17: Tag-Up
The Official Rules require a baserunner to retouch his original base when a fly ball is caught before he can legally advance. If he fails to tag-up properly, he is in jeopardy of being put out on appeal for leaving his base early.
In this play, the runner has clearly left third base before the ball was legally caught by the left fielder.
The key to umpiring this play is to determine the exact position of the runner at the time the fly ball is originally touched by the first fielder. As you can see, the runner touched the base after the first fielder touched the ball, but he left it before the second fielder finally secured it for the out.
In defining a legal catch, the Official Rules stipulate that runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the fly ball.
This runner has advanced legally and should not be called out if an appeal is made for leaving early.
