Lesson 44:
A Situation 22 Ambidextrous Pitcher
Situation # 22: Ambidextrous Pitcher
Switch hitters are a common occurrence in almost every game played today…but…
when’s the last time you saw an ambidextrous pitcher? A puzzling scenario can occur when the two meet.
With a left-handed batter due up, the right-hander on the mound surprises everybody.
He changes glove hands and decides to pitch left-handed. Unbeknowing to him, the batter also has a surprise up his sleeve…he’s a switch hitter. Now facing a left-handed pitcher, the batter moves into the right-hand batter’s box.
Seeing this, the pitcher switches glove hands once again and prepares to pitch right-handed to the right-handed switch hitter. Not to be outdone, the batter moves back to the left side.
As the umpire, how far do you let this routine continue?
The umpire shall allow the pitcher to change pitching hands one time per batter. If the batter switches to the opposite side and the pitcher counters by switching back to his right hand, the umpire shall call “time” and inform the pitcher that he has to complete pitching to this batter left-handed. The pitcher is allowed only one change per at bat.
