Lesson 42:
A Situation 21 Over Running 1st Base
Situation # 21: Overrunning First Base
Certain rules apply to plays at first base that do not apply anywhere else. For example, the batter-runner is allowed to overrun first base without liability to be put out if he returns to the base immediately. However, there are certain actions that are not allowed and these actions put him in jeopardy.
In this first play, the batter-runner touched the base then overran it. He turned left toward second before returning to first. Is he allowed to do this? Is he out when tagged?
No! He is permitted to overrun first base and turn either to his right or left before returning.
However…if he made an attempt to advance to second before returning to first, he is in jeopardy and out if tagged before getting back to the base safely.
