Lesson 50:
A Situation 25 Catcher Interference
Situation #25: Catcher Interference
With a runner on third attempting to steal home or score by means of a squeeze play, the catcher is not allowed to touch the batter or his bat without the ball in his possession.
In this play, the catcher touches the bat as the batter prepares to bunt. That’s catcher’s interference and carries a very special penalty.
In this case, the penalty is severe: The batter is awarded first base and a balk is charged to the pitcher. The runner from third scores and all other runners would also be awarded one base on the balk penalty.
