Lesson 48:
A Situation 24 Fair Foul
Situation #24: Fair / Foul
Lots of arguments are created over the umpire’s fair/foul decisions. Every person in the ballpark sees the same play from a different angle. It’s critically important that you, as the umpire, clearly understand the rule and then get the proper angle.
In this play, the first baseman is positioned with both feet in fair territory in front of the bag. He reaches across the foul line and fields the ball over foul territory. Since he is positioned in fair territory when he touches the ball, is this a fair ball?
Nope! This is a foul ball. The position of the fielder’s feet is irrelevant. The ball is determined to be fair or foul based on its position relative to the foul line. This ball is right of the line over foul territory. Foul ball!
