Lesson 8:
A Situation 4 Batter HBP
Situation #4: Batter Hit By Pitch While Swinging
One of the age-old questions in baseball is: Are the hands considered part of the bat? In other words, if the batter swings or bunts at a pitch and the ball strikes his hand gripping the bat, is the ball in play? Does the play stand or is the batter out for illegally batting a pitch?
Let’s slow things down and take a closer look…..the batter is attempting to bunt the ball. The pitch hits his top hand gripping the bat and the ball rolls into fair territory. You’re the ump…what do you have?
The ball is dead. Anytime a pitch that the batter is attempting to hit touches him, the ball is dead and the pitch counts as a strike. If it is strike 3, the batter is out. In all cases, the ball is dead and no runners may advance.
