Lesson 14:
A Situation 7 Tag Up-Running Start
Situation #7: Tag-Up
To legally advance on a fly ball that is caught by a fielder, the runner must retouch the base he occupied at the time of the pitch…and…he must do this after the fly ball has been touched by the fielder.
In this play, the alert baserunner on third anticipates that the left fielder will catch the ball. Rather than start from a stopped position on the base, he decides to get a running start. He positions himself a few steps behind the bag; starts for home while the ball is still in the air; and retouches the base after the ball has been touched by the left fielder.
Under professional rules, this is considered illegal baserunning, running starts are illegal. However, to retire the runner for his illegal act, the defensive team must make a legal appeal before a pitch, play, or attempted play.
Rule Reference: 7.10 (a) Comment / 2.00 Catch
