Lesson 18:
A Situation 9 Coach Assist.
Situation #9: Coach Assist
The rule book advises all umpires to “keep your eye everlastingly on the ball when it is in play.” If you do that, you are certainly going to miss a lot of other action that you need to see.
The umpire needs to watch the ball and, at the appropriate times, glance at the runners. This play is a perfect example of why that principle is so important.
Here you can see that the coach has changed his mind and wants the runner to stop at third. The coach is guilty of physically assisting the runner. This is considered interference and the runner shall be declared out for his coach’s illegal action.
The umpire should point to the assist when the contact occurs and declare verbally “coach assist.” Do not call time immediately. Wait until all other action has stopped and then signal “Time!” and call the runner out. Plays made on other runners stand.
