Lesson 46:
A Situation 23 Disabled Player
Situation #23: Disabled Player Following Home Run
In this instructional series, we have covered the rule prohibiting a base coach from physically assisting a runner as he advances around the bases.
This situation is a little different. The batter hits a home run over the center field fence. Unfortunately, as he is circling the bases, he trips on the second base bag and injures himself. Is a coach, manager, trainer or anyone else allowed to assist him? If he can’t complete running the bases, does his run count?
Under pro rules, a substitute runner may replace the injured player and the run counts.
A home run is a four base award and the ball is dead. A substitute is allowed during the dead ball situation.
