Creating Space with Back to Goal

     view description
    • Objective

To start with your back to the goal and check to the ball to create room for a shot without using support.

      Coaching Points

First, the striker must realize when this is the only option available. Check away from the ball, then back to the ball very quickly to potentially gain a couple of yards to receive the ball facing the goal. If this isn't possible, use the defender's body by leaning in, throw a fake by leaning your body one way before receiving the ball, then quickly roll the other way to shoot, and shoot early. Have an arm out to feel how close the defender is and/or take a quick look over your shoulder to see where the defender is standing.

      Problems to Watch Out For

Players will not check quickly enough to be able to turn and shoot. Players will hesitate too long to shoot after turning, allowing the defender to get a foot in and block the shot.

      Why This Works

Players get practice at having to be creative to take a shot on their own when they do not have support.
