    Standing Ball-Striking Technique

     view description
    • Objective

To have the ball go directly up to about head height, without any rotation or spin of the ball, particularly backward spin.

      Coaching Points

Keeping toes down and ankle locked, the kicking leg moves to the ball, but the player's foot stays in the same locked position. Keeping your eye on the ball, strike through the middle of the ball, and follow through.

      Problems to Watch Out For

Players will toss the ball too high, which makes good contact very difficult. Players will place too much emphasis on catching the ball: The real objective is to have the ball go upward without spin or rotation, even if it goes forward a little and cannot be caught easily. Also, don't just juggle the ball between the feet.

      Why This Works

Players get an understanding of how the ball should feel coming off the foot and how they also must maintain balance.
