Receiving Ball with Back to Goal

     view description
    • Objective

To have the striker execute a good lay-off that enables a midfielder to get a shot on goal.

      Coaching Points

Good movement is needed to beat the defender to the ball. Communicate where runs are going and if it's going to be a first-time lay-off. The striker gets in the line of the ball to protect it, lays pass off at good speed for a first-time strike by the midfielder. Spin in to the goal to follow up and get a potential rebound from the goalkeeper.

      Problems to Watch Out For

Players not checking to the ball quickly enough and laying the ball off too fast for the midfielder to attempt a first-time shot.

      Why This Works

The majority of times in a game situation, the striker will be under pressure from behind and will need to lay the ball back to maintain possession.
