This presentation is from the Virtual Coaches Clinic from March/April 2020 where I outline a 3out 2 in offensive system plus answer questions from the particpants.
This presentation is from the Wyndham Basketball Association's Online Coaches Clinic from April 2020. In the video I present a range of offensive concepts, actions and sets from the European professional leagues.
In this video, I go through my method of teaching individual offence within a team dynamic - called 'advantage based offence'. I show how individual offensive skills can be taught, developed and applied much more effectively in a team environment than through individual practice.
The video includes important offensive concepts like - What is an advantage? How do we create advantages? Once we create an advantage, how do we attack the best advantage?
The 'advantaged based offence' is taught through 'small sided games' which are fun, dynamic and engaging scenarios for athletes to play in to learn the concepts. These games work on a variety of key offensive ideas such as spacing, ball movement, individual offence, decision making and shot selection.
Additionally, the video also includes MORE 'Position Pressure' individual defensive drills. These build on my first individual defence video (`Position Pressure` - teaching aggressive individual defence) which can be purchased at:

Pick And Roll (PNR) Defence - Cancelling Screens
The best PNR defence is that the screen never takes place. We call this 'cancelling' the screen.
In this video, I go through a progression of teaching players how to cancel PNRs from the defenders both at the point of the screen, as well as, defenders who are away from the ball.
I also explain the following defensive concepts:
The video shows a collection of small sided games and breakdown drills to introduce and refine these defensive concept. It also displays the training environment we use which gives players the opportunity to improve their decision making. The teaching points are simple and clear, and can be used for teams of all ages and skill level.
In this video, I introduce 'Advantage based' offence. Traditionally, we have thought that when we have the ball on offence our goal is to create a 'good shot'. 'Advantage based' offence shifts the paradigm to where our goal on offence is to create 'advantages' which LEAD TO a 'good shot'.
What is an advantage? Advantages are essentially mistakes by the defence. Once we have an advantage, the players choose where the ball should go to attack the best advantages.
Some of the advantages introduced on the video are:
• Space Advantage: You are open to shoot
• Off balance defense: Your defender is off balanced and so we attack them off the dribble
• Numerical advantage: Offence outnumbers defense – offence makes decision as to whether to take the advantage or extend the advantage
• Lane Advantage – there is space to drive
The video shows a collection of small sided games and breakdown drills to introduce and refine the concept of 'Advantage based' offence. It also displays the training environment we use which gives players the opportunity to improve their decision making. The teaching points are simple and clear, and can be used for teams of all ages and skill level.
As coaches, we talk about decision making on the offensive end a lot. Why not the defensive end? Of course it is important of having a defensive 'system'. A way of doing thigs. Just like it is important to have an offensive system. But we allow and encourage decision making within our system on offence, but not so much on defence. Lets change that and encourgae our players to be thinkers on defence, not just 'do-ers'. You can teach defensive decision making all the way down to youth teams – it takes time, teaching and trust.
In this presentation I show numerous examples of where players can make decisions on the defensive end and the steps coaches can take to teach them. Included in this content is also the video with my slides from the presentation (Video 1) - so you can watch them along at your own speed.
This video takes you through some of my favourite drills for teaching decision making on offence. These drills I have used with both pro teams and youth teams over my career.
All the drills have defence included so that the offensive players can read when to pass, shoot or drive. There are ten (10) different drills that build upon each other and progress from 2v1, to 3v2, then up to 3v3. The three main offensive concepts that we focus on are 1) Attacking off the catch 2) Passing against the grain 3) Drive, Kick, Clear (DKC).
Every drill has opportunities for multiple players to get shots in the same repetition of the drill. We have a Dr Dish machine in each drill; however, these drills can still be used without the machine by adding in another passing line.
If you are looking for drills to get a high volume of shots up AND teach decision making with your players, then this is the video to purchase!
In this video, I go through a simple progression of how to teach team defensive concepts that will stifle your opponents. I cover defence on the ball, off ball stance and positioning, as well as, rotations to stop penetration.
I also teach three different coverages to guard the pick and roll, the most dangerous action in the game of basketball. The coverages include:
- Pressure Coverage: Hard Hedge
- 2v2 Coverage: 'Flat'
- Switching Coverage
These tactics and concepts covered in this video are relevant for youth teams as well as professional clubs.
This presentation is from the Virtual Coaches Clinic where I present defensive concepts of Stunting, 'Next' and an introduction to defensive decision making.
Teaching PNR Offence that attacks EVERY type of defence.
In this video, I explain the concept of how we use the Pick and Roll in the middle of the floor (Mid PNR) as a method for creating advantages on offence. Specifically, I detail the way I teach players to set up their defender prior to the Pick and roll, different ways to attack all types of defensive coverages, as well as, how all five players react off the ball before and after the screen.
If Shooting is the premium skill on offence, then the ability to guard the ball and put pressure on your opponent individually is the premium skill on defence. In this video, I describe my personal philosophy on individual defence (which I call “Position Pressure”) and explain my key teaching points in this area. You’ll also see some of my favourite breakdown drills for guarding the ball in various situations – full court defence, guarding the ball on the perimeter and closing out drills.
