Derek Sheridan Rustbelt Basketball Coaches' Network

Retired High School Head Basketball Coach

About

I coached high school basketball for 27 years in both Indiana & Ohio. Recently, I retired from coaching. Over the past few years I have helped coaches organize their basketball programs & have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have nine former assistant coaches who are now head coaches, so my wife, Stephanie, and I have enjoyed watching their games.

We also have two ex-players who are now head coaches, this has been a blessing for our family. Being able to help them progress in their careers has been exciting. Additionally, Troy, one of our assistant coaches who lived with us for several years is now teaching mathmatics & coaching JV basketball, golf, & track. Stephanie & I consider him part of our family, so we have found much joy in watching him progress in his teaching & coaching career.
According to my last coaching staff, my strengths as a head coach were organizational skills, game/practice planning, Princeton O', Mover/Blocker O', Special Situations, Pack Line M2M D', 23-Zone D', and designating clear roles for our players. As I became more experienced I was also effective at selecting players who fit well (mental & physical) in our program. To say I was burned on that topic a couple of times in my first few years would be accurate. Live & learn.
Over Stephanies journey through teaching & coaching; we were able to teach & coach (Stephanie is not a coach - she is a MS Social Studies Teacher) for rural, suburban, inner-city, private, & college prep school systems. We have experienced so many different cultures, situations, and styles; so we have a pretty good grasp on motivating young people.
I have found that I enjoy helping coaches immensely. It has become a passion of mine. Uphoria for me is having my basement full of basketball coaches and talking shop - from A to Z.

I have also been active in our local coaches association, the NOD7BCA (Northwest Ohio District VII Basketball Coaches Association). I began as the B/G Division II rep, and then became the vice president, and eventually the president. Currently, I am the clinic director for NOD7BCA; so I am in charge of scheduling, organizing, and administering our clinics. Over the years we have had some outstanding speakers. Last fall's clinic headliner was Phil Martelli, the former St. Joe's coach & current associate head coach for the University of Michigan's Men's Basketball Team.
I've enjoyed becoming a member of the basketball coaches clinic community. I've been asked to speak at several clinics with topics ranging from Mover/Blocker offense, set plays into M/B offense, and 23 zone defense.
