1. Opening-How to Score More Points in the Post
As a player are you frustrated because you don't get the ball enough in the post or your teammates don't trust you to throw you the ball?
As a coach Have you ever struggled with getting the most out of your Post Players? Not sure how to help them learn how to get open and score?
I’ve been there. Playing for the legendary Don Meyer and alongside an All American Post Player and MVP of our National Tournament gave me a base, but I had a lot to learn when I got into coaching.
I couldn’t just rely on using drills I used as a player or what I thought worked. I had to dig deeper.
Quickly I found out what Post Players needed.
Successful Repeated Repetitions under Game Conditions.
I had to make sure they did the drill over and over successfully.
And then quickly.
Once I started this process of successful repetitions and going game speed, my players started showing steady improvement
I changed from just checking the box when doing Post Play Drills to being intentional and it showed. Now instead of having players going through the motions when doing a drill, we made sure they did it correctly and at a quick pace.
When I watch a team practice or someone working with a Post Player the most common mistakes I see is not focusing on the areas that will help those players the most.
Not concentrating on the footwork to get open, the fundamentals of how to catch and where to catch the ball playing with knees bent and following every missed shot with a put back on the offensive end.

We share teaching points in each drill. These are the reminders to give your players or to remind yourself when going through a drill. We are specific. Instead of "Work hard" "Go Quick" "Make the Shot" we want to give points that relate to the technique emphasized in the drill.
