Lesson 6:
6. Receiving the Ball in the Post
Receiving the ball is a critical skill for any Post Player.
Unfortunately is it is a skill that is often overlooked.
For every Post Play drill, keep an emphasis on catching the ball.
Here are the techniques for catching in the Post.
1. Body in Line. Knees bent and wide base for balance. I am going to get my body in line with the passer. You are trying to line up your feet with the passer's feet. Allow your teammate to see the front of your jersey. This makes it easier to complete the pass.
2 Both Hands Up. Have your palms to the Passer, See the back of your hands. If I was receiving a pass anywhere else on the floor I would have my hands up into my shooting pocket.
I want to spread my arms so I am taking up space. Also, I am giving my teammate a better chance to see my hands. They may have to throw away from the defender so I want to give them a big target.
I also want the official to see two hands up. If they see one hand up and can't see the other hand I have the chance to be called for an offensive foul — a push off or holding the defender.
3. Chin the Ball. Catch with the fingertips, and see the ball all the way into the hands. Then immediately chin the ball. When we use the term Chin the ball that means to get the ball underneath the chin, elbows out. This makes it hard for the defense to steal the ball.
Anything you catch in the Paint area chin the ball. So many players struggle with catching the ball, especially in the Post Area. There are a lot of factors that go into not making the catch. Not concentrating Or a pass is off target or a defender is making too much contact. Be the type of player who can catch in the post. your teammates will love throwing you the ball. Players get frustrated when they throw the ball inside and the Post Player can't make the catch. This is a skill you can improve quickly by using the techniques.
