Lesson 7:
7. Reading the Defense
Reading the Defense.
Part of Scoring More Points in the Post is learning how to Read the defense.
There are three areas to understand.
1 Locate. Find where the defender is on the court. This happens before you even catch the ball. Doing so allows you to be in the position to catch where you want the ball. You want to be in control of where you catch. If a defender is taking one area away know how to move to get open or how to get set up so in another area where you can post up and score.
2. On the Catch.
After the catch is made you must know where and how the defender is playing. Is there an angle completely taken away, do I need to set the defender up with a shot fake or ball fake
Before making a move in the post it is important to know where my defender is and not to just catch and go especially when catching on the block.
3. Help. Know if another defender is coming to double the post. Know if there is someone waiting in the paint if you are driving.
Being aware of where the defense is located before you catch. Then knowing how they are playing once you make the catch. Then know where help is coming from. You know each of these and you will Score More Points in the Post
