8. Pitch Ahead Drill
We start with the Pitch Aheads Drill to show the importance of running the floor. We also focus on making the catch and finish with a made basket. Players gain confidence in running the floor full speed and being able to make the play.
The Teaching Points are:
1. Run the floor.
2. Look and call for the ball, Concentrate on the catch.
3. Finish with a made basket.
The Coach or teammate will Throw the ball out in front of the player each time so they have to make an effort to catch on the run. The more post players get in the habit of running the floor they will see the impact they can make on the game. It is important you work on the skill of catching on the run. putting the ball on the floor and putting the ball in the basket. Not only will post players become more confident their teammates will gain confidence as well and will look to throw them the ball.
You can vary up the ways to finish. One foot layup, two-foot power move, using the dribble, or no dribble. Your confidence will soar by getting out in front of the defense, successfully catching the ball and finishing with a made basket. The Pitch Ahead Drill teaches a Post Player how to run the floor so they can get easy baskets and put tremendous pressure on the opponent's defense.
