Lesson 3:
3. Do this one thing.
Learn this one thing, and you will see the payoff.
When your team has to run in practice, and coaches line your team up on the sideline or baseline do this: Touch the line every time. I have watched players who when running a line drill will stop short of the line.
Either because they are lazy, tired, out of shape or not engaged in the drill. Post Players especially fall into this category. I see it in teams I 'm coaching or when watching a team practice. Why is touching the line important? Because you are continually building your skill. Here is what I tell players, by stopping before you need to stop or cutting a drill only hurts you. Does not help you. If you are worried about finishing a drill in line or you don't want to be last, then work to change your running ability. By cutting off short, you do two things. 1. You don't give yourself an honest evaluation of your condition, your speed, your quickness. 2. You don't think of an honest assessment of coaches. Coaches are there to help you and not to punish you no matter what you think when running line drills.
Let's take for example you have to run back and forth the length of the floor five times at every practice. This is just for example sake. Now let's say you have 100 practices during the year. So if stop one step short on each line drill that is five steps per practice and 100 practices equals 500 steps. You may think you are gaining by not taking the extra step. Well, your teammate who you are trying to beat out or your opponent is getting 500 extra steps on you. That may not seem like a lot, but it adds up.
I was one of the slowest running line drills during my freshman year in college. Near last place or last place every time we ran. I wanted to change that. By the time my junior and senior year came, I was never last and never near the back of the pack. I may not have won the line drills, but I was up near the front every time. Because I made up my mind, I was going to hit the line every time and not let anyone get an advantage on me. Touch the line every time. The payoff is worth it.
